Variety seems to be the main trait in Gianni's personality. The
attitude of being open to play good music, regardless of labels,
has helped him in building his career as a very active musician.
Graduated in Saxophone and in Jazz Gianni also plays
the flute, the
clarinet and is active as a composer, arranger and as a teacher.
In the music he writes for his band, Gianni tries to melt his
fundamentally jazzish education with the interest in non
European musical cultures that he has nurtured along the years.
With Media Res he has collaborated in the film score of "Le Fate Ignoranti" by Ferzan Ozpetek.
In 2004 the ensemble has published its debut album
"Media Res" (Jazzinroma).
After a pause of two years the band has recorded a second work
"Que la fête commence" 2009 Alfa Music -Egea
PMJO
is revealing itself as one of the most interesting ensemble of
this kind for the accuracy of its performances, its soloists'
fantasy and the originality of its own repertoire. During two
seasons the band has also hosted guest musicians like Mike
Stern, Kenny Wheeler, Maria Schneider, Martial Solal, Dave
Fiuczynski, Karl Berger, Horacio el Negro Hernandez, Uri Caine,
Nguyen Le, Rosalia De Sousa.
In very recent years his interest as a composer has led him in writing music for much larger ensembles.
His composition
“Flying over Gocius de Santu Micheli” has won First Price at
International Competion in Composition and Arrangement for Jazz Orchestra
“Scrivere in Jazz 2010”,
held in Sassari (Italy).
Another composition: "Kirshrot" has been chosen for the finals of
ArtEz Composition Contest 2011
held in Enschede (The Nederlands)
During his career Gianni has collaborated as woodwind player or as soloist in the recording of a
large number of film scores, records and has had the privilege
of performing, touring and/or recording with musicians, artist and
istitutions like Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Yusef Lateef,
Jimmy Knepper, Lester Bowie, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Jack
Walrath, George Garzone, Dick Oats, Horacio Hernandez, Ray
Mantella, Alfredo Rodriguez, Gunther Shuller, Luis Bacalov,
Gianni Ferrio, Stefano Mainetti, Andrea Guerra, Vittorio Nocenzi,
Natalie Cole, Carl Anderson, Manhattan Transfer, Micheal Bublè.
Leo Ferrè, Mirelle Mathieu, Domenico Modugno, Ornella Vanoni,
Johnny Dorelli, Riccardo Cocciante, Renato Zero, Giovanotti,

Gianni is also very active as a teacher.
He has worked at the "S. Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome and at
"L. Cherubini" Conservatory in Florence,
At the moment he teaches Improvisation techniques at the "Luisa D'
Annunzio" Conservatory in Pescara and "Jazz Saxophone" at "Luigi
Canepa" Conservatory" in Sassari.
